Crime - the violation of a society's formally enacted criminal law.
Crime is demonstrated in the episode when Manny and Luke act out because they are jealous of all of the attention Lily is receiving. They decide to take their uncle's car and drive it around the block. This is an example of crime because US laws require driver's to have a driver's license and be of a certain age, depending on the state.
Social control - attempts by society to regulate people's thoughts and behavior.
Claire demonstrates a form of social control over her husband, Phil. Phil is more of the creative thinker, and Claire is more practical. Claire is always trying to make Phil in touch with reality when he schemes up some new invention or project or way of doing something that is a little "out of the box." Although this is probably considered a small form of social control, it is still an example of it.
Deterrence - the attempt to discourage criminality through the use of punishment.
Deterrence is used by the Dunphy parents when their kids misbehave. An example of this is when Haley and Alex dent Claire's van while leaving the parking lot. They chose not to tell their mom about it, and when their mom found out, she took away Haley's driving privelages. Taking away Haley's driving privelages was the punishment to deter the girl's from doing that again.
Deviance - the recognized violation of cultural norms.
Cameron and Mitchell demonstrate sexual deviance by being a homosexual couple. The cultural norm for the US is for couples to be made of a man and a woman. However, as time has progressed, Cam and Mitchell's homosexuality is probably perceived as less deviant because, in America, the gay community is receiving more and more support. It is becoming more widely accepted.
Crimes against property- Crimes that involve theft of money or property belonging to others
Gloria commits this crime when she steals her neighbors dog. She does this because the dog was being neglected. She took the dog and gave it to a farmer who would enjoy the dog.
Victimless crimes- Violations of law in which there are no obvious victims
Claire commits this crime when she continuosly parks in a no stopping zone at her childrens school. Eventually a cop notices her and gives her a ticket.
Stigma- A powerfully negative label that greatly changes a person's self-concept and social identity
Manny's real father was given a negative label when he left Manny and Gloria. Now he is less important and out of thier family.
Labeling theory- The idea that deviance and conformity result not so much from what people do as from how others respond to those actions.
When Cameron is doing a drum solo while playing a live show, he gets a little to much into it and ends up doing a longer than expected solo. This causes his audience to lose interest in the music and the situation gets akward.
Manny clearly is not of legal driving age, and he has committed a crime by operating this vehicle.
Gloria has a love of dogs, but she still commits a crime against property when she steals a poorly cared for dog.
